Digital Booklet
"... no jazz artist has ever recorded so many masterpieces in such a condensed window of studio time ... musical statements that will be enjoyed as long as people have ears and taste." - JazzTimes.com "... (Miles) never has sounded better ... these sessions are the best Davis has made ... there are many moments of pure music and emotional joy ... one of the best LPs (of 1957) ..." - DownBeat "... (gives us) some sense of just how bold and shocking the saxophonist’s sound must have been to his early listeners. His relationship with the other members of the Miles Davis Quintet is particularly tense. Here Trane plays amongst a group of musicians renowned for their understated eloquence, taut rhythmic interplay and less-is-more ethos and he eschews all of these qualities in favour of an ecstatic (over)abundance of notes. The man really would have made a fantastic acid rock guitarist." - PopMatters.com This is one of four highly acclaimed albums Miles Davis made during two days of marathon sessions in May and October 1956 to fulfill a contractual obligation. Davis recorded 26 tracks over the two days, all live off the floor and all first takes, with his superb first great quintet that includes John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The track list contains the first recording of what became a signature tune for Davis, My Funny Valentine. According to Davis himself, he called this album Cookin’ because “that’s what we did, came in and cooked."

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
