Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008, this 1963 release from John Coltrane and his celebrated quartet puts the emphasis on ballads, as promised by the title. According to the original liner notes, Coltrane and his musicians had never played any of these songs before; they brought sheet music into the studio and discussed and rehearsed each tune briefly just prior to recording, mostly done in one take.
