"... one of the great recorded live shows in the history of the genre."
- The Guardian
"The high musical quality of the show illustrates the greatness of jazz and the jazz musician. A certain collective unconscious existed between these men enabling them to just stand and deliver this art ... the Massey Hall Quintet performances are that much more essential because they would be the last time Parker and Gillespie would perform together."
- All About Jazz
This remastered reissue combines two of Charles Mingus's most highly-acclaimed releases: his 1959 album Ah Um and highlights from the historic 1953 live set recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto. Ah Um is one of only 50 albums selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry, while the pivotal live album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1995. The live tracks feature a jazz dream team playing with Mingus: Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto sax, Bud Powell on piano and drummer Max Roach. The only time all five musicians ever played together, the show was called by some critics "the greatest jazz concert ever."
