Inventive and versatile composer Robert Nelson is known for his prolific output and his forays into a broad range of idioms. Many of his creations feature artful fusions of classical, jazz and even hard rock and demonstrate his particular affinity for vocal music, from operas and choral creations to the art song, as exemplified on this release. The pieces performed here by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sonja Bruzauskas reflect these characteristics and Nelson's richly expressive palette encompassing a remarkable range of emotions and moods from sombre and haunting to humorous. Bruzauskas heads a diverse and accomplished cast of collaborators, accompanied either by piano or by varying chamber ensembles on the album's two song cycles, Zoo Stories and the title piece, Watercolors as well as seven other songs presented in pairs or as substantial individual works.
