|
Pianist Karolina Rojahn and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra present three recent works by American composer Carl Vollrath, all written between 2012 and 2015. These concertos are linked thematically and in a way portray different hues of the same colour. Vollrath prefers to regard these pieces as "pastels" since he approaches them with a functional intention, evoking imagery or scenery in an abstract way, allowing listeners to create their own interpretation. While written in a neo-impressionistic lexicon, they are influenced significantly by Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Bartók’s piano concertos, Eastern classical scales, folk music and jazz piano. The various orchestral sections and piano develop unique characteristics, supporting and contrasting each other. The piano’s lyrical personality weaves itself throughout, from sensual and controlled sections to frantic and spontaneous moments, employing jazz elements, chromaticism and rhythmic emphasis to develop its narrative.
