On this album's intriguing title track Dirty Beasts, pianist Martin Butler sets three verses from Roald Dahl's hilarious collection of poems. The deliciously gruesome but immediately accessible work for speaker, piano and wind quintet is narrated by Simon Callow, who brings to life the stories of the Crocodile, Tummy Beast and Pig with a variety of gloriously ebullient regional accents. Butler's playfully evocative music is wonderfully realized by the New London Chamber Ensemble and members of the Navarra String Quartet. The pianist-composer also performs two solo works and presents a pair of chamber pieces which showcase his lyrical music, strongly influenced by dance form, rhythms, jazz and improvisation.
