"... a wonderfully jarring collection of fresh treatments ... maybe the finest record of Ellington covers." - Jazz.com "Thelonious. The name, like the man, is unique, exceptional ... this reissue, then, of Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington is significant on a variety of levels ... it is an outstanding album and tends to exist as an overlooked gem in the Monk discography ... it is also important for what it signified, in 1955, to have Monk cover Ellington, already a legend ... it only takes the first, familiar notes of the opening selection to make one thing abundantly clear: Monk playing Ellington makes perfect sense." - PopMatters.com Two important mid-1950s Thelonious Monk albums are combined on this remastered compilation. The first eight tracks come from Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington, a celebrated tribute featuring bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in July 1955. The remaining songs were originally released in 1954 under the title Monk, with Sonny Rollins on three tunes.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
