“Andrew Kennedy picks up on this touchingly in Over the Sea, his rise of a fifth at the end of each stanza hauntingly dying away as if carried off across the waves by the piano. This link between piano and voice permeates the entire recording: there's an abundance of sensitive, sympathetic readings in which singer and pianist dovetail into one, whether the song in question is simply an enjoyable little vignette, or whether there have been deeper levels to draw out.”
- Charlotte Gardner, BBC Music

“as his hymns testify, Shaw could write good tunes and intended his songs to reach the widest audience. These performances, with Burnside the immaculate accompanist, are exemplary: there is no better interpreter of English song today than Roderick Williams, and it's a huge tribute to soprano Sophie Bevan and tenor Andrew Kennedy that their contributions are a match for his.”
- Andrew Clements, The Guardian

Martin Shaw is remembered for his contribution to English church music, having co-edited the Songs of Praise hymn book and The Oxford Book of Carols, but his other works—including over 100 songs—are a testament to a compositional prowess that is sadly mostly forgotten. The 36 songs on this release are settings of poems from Shakespeare to Yeats, showcasing Shaw’s dynamic and memorably melodic sensibility, realized beautifully by singers Sophie Bevan, Andrew Kennedy and Roderick Williams.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
