"We are used to good CD recordings but this one seems to have it even more right than usual. Congratulations to technical guru Frédéric Briant for his efforts in producing a spacious and detailed sound in which the voices seem to be just out there in front of the listener ... great notes, great packaging: a winner!"

Johann Christoph Pepusch’s English-language masque Venus and Adonis, inspired by the operas by Giovanni Battista Bononcini and Alessandro Scarlatti, bristles with Italian virtuosity and dynamism. Unlike most English-language dramatic music of the time, Venus and Adonis makes ample use of dramatic recitative. A clear model for Handel’s later Acis and Galatea, this world premiere recording of Pepusch’s wonderful masque reestablishes the work as a milestone in the history of English opera.
