"... a reminder of his strong talent ... the album possesses a solid core: Bramhall reworks his blues-rock traditions along with some world music influences into something that touches on the Allman Brothers and Hendrix ... the album does contain a number of memorable tracks ... fans likely won’t be disappointed ..."
- PopMatters.com
"... a consolidation of his strengths as a straight-up rocker, Texas bluesman and modern soul crooner ... he never became a household name even as he became the guy household names called upon to make their own music better, and even Rich Man may not finally break him into that status. But this time, that’s on the public; he did his part."
- Something Else!
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Doyle Bramhall II’s long-awaited album Rich Man, his first in 15 years, reflects both his extensive experience working with artists like Eric Clapton as well as an intensive spiritual and musical journey that took him to India and Africa in search of new sounds and an inner peace. There’s blues on Rich Man, mixed with influences of R&B, Indian and Arabic music delivered along with generous doses of Bramhall’s distinctive guitar work. Norah Jones appears on the song New Faith; a duet recorded live in the studio in a couple of hours. November is a tribute to the guitarist's late father, drummer Doyle Bramhall, who died in 2011. The track has the essence of their favourite R&B records the two listened to as Bramhall grew up, its contemporary groove easily recalling the horn arrangements they loved, but with a decidedly personal statement.
“There’s a lot to each song ... they tell a story. It’s hard to summarize 70 minutes of music in a couple sentences, because all the songs have dual meanings and themes that apply to a collective experience that parallels my personal experience ... all the songs are steps on a personal journey back to my truth, which comes around full circle from beginning to end on this album. It's a very personal record for me."
