Digital Booklet
Billboard 200 - #34, 2016 "... (on Hold On, I’m Coming) it turns out her kerosene vocals are more than enough on their own. Her version of this track doesn’t just singe, it scorches. A." - Entertainment Weekly "... some of the magical Memphis songs from the vast Stax catalogue, stuff by legends like Otis Redding, Mavis Staples, Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor ... a 'normal' singer might be afraid of or at the very least intimidated by trying to cover such luminaries. Etheridge, as she's proven time and time again in live and recorded performances, ain't no normal singer. She's able to channel her inner Mavis on Respect Yourself and probably has Otis smiling somewhere in heaven ... her version of (Hold On, I'm Coming) is just nasty, in the best possible way ... a fresh, almost spontaneous feel that's as amazing as it is remarkable for music that is decades old ... A-." - The Plain Dealer Melissa Etheridge pays tribute to Stax Records and the rich history of classic Southern soul with this collection of covers associated with the label, including songs by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, the Staple Singers, William Bell and more. Etheridge showcases her signature rasp and unmistakable guitar prowess throughout the album, recorded in Nashville at Willie Mitchell’s legendary Royal Studios, home to Al Green and others. To channel the classic Memphis sound found on the soulful originals, MEmphis Rock And Soul was produced by Mitchell's son "Boo" and features a backing band comprised of the Hodges Brothers and other top Memphis musicians who are legends in their own right. Etheridge even used Green’s famed RCA 77DX ribbon microphone ("No. 9”). Special guest John Mayer appears on lead guitar on two songs. "I always wanted to jump into the whole world of cover songs, songs that have already been done because I grew with that, I started playing in bands and played other people's songs for many, many years and I've always been a huge music lover. I'll throw in a cover song every now and then when I'm playing, but to go into this project, go into the Stax Records catalogue, which is to me the beginning of rock and roll, it's the home of rock and roll ... it's just the finest musicians, the finest singers, some of the greatest songs. And I got to reimagine it, I got to go and sing it, so now when I'm performing it, it's just ridiculous. I don't think I should have that much fun, but I do!" - Melissa Etheridge

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!

Software for Mac OS X

  • iTunes : plays AIFF, it's free and you probably have it already!
  • Audirvana : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period

Software for Windows

  • iTunes : plays AIFF, it's free and you probably have it already!
  • JRiver : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period
