"Five Stars ... (conductor Gardner) has always been good at galvanizing huge performances and this spectacular account of Schoenberg's work was no exception ... it is good that Chandos Records was there to capture the event ... the sweep of Gardner's conducting, by turns luminous and incisive. He unleashed the piece's volcanic passions while never becoming mired in its high-calorific density and somehow avoided drowning the singers."
- The Telegraph

"... enormously impressive ... the playing of the Bergen Philharmonic is rich, seductive and sensuous ... (Gardner is) alive to the lyricism and drama of the piece in equal measure ... a real willingness to explore the sheer gorgeousness of the score, as well as a powerful sense of drama where required ... his control is mightily impressive, as is his ear for balance, helped no end by sumptuously detailed Chandos sound ... the choral singing is thrillingly alive and direct ... massed singers are nicely balanced in the sound picture ... a terrific addition to the Gurrelieder discography ... in glorious high-resolution sound that no one interested in this last great flowering of Romanticism will want to be without."
- Gramophone

Recorded live in December 2015 amid the sumptuous acoustics of Griegha llen in Bergen, this epic interpretation of Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder involves 350 performers: large choral forces, six exceptional soloists and the legendary Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, extended for the occasion, all conducted by Edward Gardner.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
